The Fuschias Tie

Lets be optimistic!! 2003 will be a great year for the Demons. How many Melbourne supporters would deny experiencing a thrill when the "red and blue" emerge from the players race at the "G" and burst through the banner to the strains of "It's a grand old flag." The oldest team wearing the best colours to the best tune. I have never failed to feel it. There is now a limited edition tie for supporters. Celebrate the new season, get one of these new ties, get down to the "G" and sing both verses of the club song!! The tie features red fuschias on a blue background in a modern design. It also features the figures "244" in the bottom left hand corner to commemorate Jimmy Stynes 244 consecutive games being completed in 1998. Why fuschias? Read on.

The History

On 25 September 1858 the Melbourne Football Club [the MFC] played its first match against South Yarra and at 5.30pm kicked one goal to win the match. In 1858 the MFC was nicknamed the "Invincible Whites" because of the all white uniform. From 1872 until 1933 they were known variously as "the Fuschias" because of their red and blue guernseys and red caps and "the Redlegs" because of their red socks. In 1933 the new coach "Checker" Hughes disapproving of the somewhat unmanly name of "Fuschias' renamed them "the Red Demons." The names Redlegs and Demons are with us yet. The tradition of the old name is reborn in this tie.
